I come from the Kosi flood basins in Bihar, where we are witnessing a huge amount of damage because of climate change. We have had devastating flooding in the last few years on a scale that hasn’t been seen before. In most cases, the floods are triggered by or escalated by manmade factors. This has made the communities even more vulnerable. Every year, they have to start from scratch.

At another event, Ms. Regnér heard from young women entrepreneurs who shared their success stories as well as the challenges they face, ranging from access to finance and market, investments and persistent gender bias.

The Deputy Executive Director also travelled to Guadalcanal Provincial Headquarters, where he had robust discussions with Guadalcanal women leaders who are working to ensure women’s voices are heard and included in peacebuilding efforts. They stressed the importance of including women as key decision-makers. “We need to involve women at the decision-making levels in peacebuilding,” said Bernadette Laure of Kakabona Village, North West Guadalcanal.

Across regions, there are 122 women aged 25-34 living in extreme poverty for every 100 men of the same age group—a reflection of the disproportionate responsibility that women in this age group bear in caring and providing for young children.


This WPS Focal Points Network event will bring together Member States, regional organizations, UN agencies and civil society organizations to discuss the implementation of the women, peace and security (WPS) agenda ahead of the 20-year anniversary of Security Council 1325 in 2020, with a focus on women’s participation in peace and security and the role of regional economic communities. Featuring government ministers, heads of regional and international organizations and national focal points on WPS, this event will showcase new WPS commitments and progress made on existing ones. There will be a ministerial segment followed by a panel and open discussion. Hosted by Namibia, Germany, Canada, Uruguay and UN Women. Speakers include Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia, Heiko Maas, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Ariel Bergamino, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, Pascale Baeriswyl, State Secretary of the Federal Department for Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, Fernando Martín Valenzuela Marzo, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Spain, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women.

The main implication of these challenges is that the voice, agency and leadership of women in climate action do not receive full attention at the global level. Similarly, decisions adopted at the global level do not necessarily translate into actions on the ground that benefit the women and girls
