Rural women are leading movements, advocating for more agroecological approaches and creating local strategies for crop diversity and improved soil, water and pest management that help households increase income and food security [2]. UN Women is supporting rural women and girls around the world to fully and equally participate in decision-making at all levels, to influence gender-responsive policy interventions, and to increase access to appropriate tools, technologies, infrastructure and institutions to build resilience and greater food security and nutrition.

Gender norms and roles continue to dictate that women and girls are the primary water carriers for their families. In over 80 per cent of households where water has to be fetched, women and girls do the fetching. When safe drinking water is not available on household premises, the burden of water collection and treatment falls largely on the shoulders of women and girls.

We knew how to make shampoo, but didn’t know how to improve the quality, how to package it and where to sell it. If not for this project, we would still be selling shampoo in empty coca cola bottles in the community.

“There are no solutions unless women are part of them, as decision-makers and as equal beneficiaries,” said Roberta Clarke, Regional Director UN Women East and Southern Africa Regional Office.

Speaking at the event, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on all partners to implement the commitments included in the HLP report. “Women’s Economic Empowerment is also a human rights issue. It contributes to building resilient economies and peaceful societies, and it is also a condition to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said, adding: “Let us deliver on the promises we have made to bring sustainable peace to the world today.”
