We left Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, on a sunny morning in April, to meet with the women who are part of the project, “Economic Empowerment of Rural Women Groups through Capacity-building.” In early 2016, Green Lane received a USD 315,000 grant from the UN Women Fund for this project, and has since provided training to 160 rural women on sustainable organic farming techniques and developing business plans, as well as equipment and seedlings needed to implement their plans. The trainings also raised their awareness about gender equality and women’s leadership.

Today’s young people have grown up in a world that is more internationally connected, more digital, and closer to environmental catastrophe than previous generations.

Challenge labels. Global soccer star Marta Vieira da Silva was only seven years old when she was told soccer wasn’t for girls. She was the only girl playing on teams full of boys. In her community, as in many parts of the world, sport is still an area dominated by men, meaning girls and women are often discouraged from participating.

However, implementation of the parity law remains a challenge because of lack of enforcement. Although parties are required to have a minimum number of women on their lists, they can provide a simple explanation to the Constitutional Court why they haven’t met the quota to get their party validated.

At its Second Regular Session, from 29 – 30 August, UN Women Executive Board endorsed the new Strategic Plan, 2018 – 2021. The Strategic Plan outlines UN Women’s strategic direction, objectives and approaches to support efforts to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030.

We want access to justice in this country to be unlimited. Let us support Government when they try to make this happen, let us engage them when they have shortcomings, let us use the resources that we have as civil society and as other partners, and let us meet them half way to change the trajectory. When a woman has to have access to justice, she has to pay in order to make the perpetrator come in front of law enforcement. That is not an acceptable situation. So, we have formed a network of women (which Ms. Diop will speak about more) all around Africa, and I see many faces here that I have seen many times. We have had long conversations, and even tears about the future of this country. And now no tears – action! Action and results!
