The lack of women in decision-making limits the reach and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergency recovery efforts. In conflict-affected countries, 18.9 per cent of parliamentary seats are held by women, much lower than the global average of 25.6 per cent.

I am broken inside. But the reason that I'm saying is this is because I really want everyone to stand because if we don't stand, no one will stand for us. We have to do it ourselves.

It is a business plan for everyone because, in Generation Equality, we want to be a coalition that includes and not excludes. So, we are open to all the controversies that we will face. We must face them, and try to make the relationships work, that come with working with people who come from different spaces. We should stay focused on achieving what is important for women through this business plan. It is about generating resources and budgets to support the plan – something that we did not manage to do in Beijing, so we are learning and improving our organizing tactics. It is also about naming the concrete and measurable deliverables within timeframes that we have agreed on.

While we express our sense of pride for who we are and how far we have come, beyond celebrations, this year’s Pride is marked by a critical need to not just stand but act in solidarity in seeking racial justice and equality.

Data from 2016 shows that discrimination against women is estimated to cost the global economy up to US trillion. If women participated in the economy on an equal footing with men, global annual GDP could increase by up to USD 28 trillion by 2025.

I also want to thank Denmark, Mexico, Norway, South Korea and Sweden, for all the support that they are also giving us. Generation Equality kickstarts in 2020 in May in Mexico and ends up in July in Paris, having benefitted from the deliberations of the 64th Commission on the Status of Women in March 2020 here at the United Nations, where we will have reviewed the global status of women over a period of 25 years.

So, as you organize yourselves, let us make sure of the goal of entering all the sectors of the economy and making a difference there, demanding the support that you deserve. We have to take advantage of the fact that the government has recognized the importance of gender and human rights by having these as a separate Pillar in the National Development Plan. That too is important for creating an environment of success in the economic sphere. UN Women is working closely with the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development to fulfil the commitments of the National Development Plan, and we are thankful for the cooperation that we enjoy with the Minister.
