Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, violence against women and girls, a gross human rights violation, impacted one in three women worldwide. Recent data from multiple countries already show a spike in reporting of domestic violence through helplines since COVID-19 lockdowns started. As countries now contend with economic crisis, service shortfalls and high levels of stress, many women find themselves trapped in isolation with abusive partners, without access to information and support services that they need.

But then, as a student at the Beijing Royal School, he came upon the Change Makers programme, an initiative supported by UN Women to introduce adolescents to issues around gender equality, gender identify, respect for diversity and preventing violence against women.

Over the last year, we have seen modest but positive momentum for resource mobilization. This year’s Structured Dialogue on Financing report shows that in 2018 UN Women achieved its highest revenue to date: USD 404.7 million – an increase of 7 per cent over 2017. This growth was primarily driven by an increase in Other Resources (9.8 per cent), while Regular Resources grew by nearly 2 per cent in a climate where other entities are seeing decreases.
